Abstract

Three experimental were carried out on Chinese cabbage. The late hybrid “Elephant” commercial cultivar was grown during summer of 1986, and the early hybrid ASVEG #1 cultivar was grown during the late cool season and summer season of 1987. Three rates of water application – 50% 75% and 100% of potential evapotranspiration ( PET ), and Four rates of ammonium sulfate side – dressing--30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/rai were studied. The results indicated that ASVEG # 1 grown in late cool season performed the best with effect the overall averaged head yield of 4.1 t/rai. The yields of Chinese cabbage grown in summer were 1.58 t/rai for “elephant” brand and 1.17 t/rai for ASVEG#1. Water had direct effect on the head yield and and tipburn incidence. Increasing the irrigation rate from 50% to 100% of PET could increases the yield by 36% while side-dressing with more ammonium sulfate from 30 to 120 kg/rai increased the yield by only 12%. At the same time, the increase in water application rate reduced the tipburn rate to 46%, but the tipburn rate was slightly increased by the NH4-N side-dressing. Calcium content of the head leaves was found to increase with the water application rate and inversely correlated to the rate of tipburn. Water management was considered to be a more practical way of alleviating tipburn damage than that of applying calcium to correct the calcium status in the plant. High production inputs are necessary to assure satisfactory yield of short duration crop. Chinese cabbage, the early cultivar ASVEG # 1 in particular, can be harvested 35-40 days after transplant. The crop will absorb nutrient in a linearly increasing amount every day form the beginning of head formation to harvesting time, so a steady and sufficient supply of nutrients, especially nitrogen and potassium is necessary until harvest (Takahashi, 1981). Water requirement, on the other hand, is less studied. Water is normally applied in an excessive amount. But in summer season, water in not always available. There is a need to understand the response of vegetable to both water and nutrient. This investigation was set up to study Chinese cabbage production during the summer season as effected by water and NH4-N side-dressing requirement.

Abstract

Male and female parents were improved to produce good hybrid progenies of Chinese cabbage, a highly self-incompatible vegetable crop. Hybrid seed production using bees was also studied. Inbred seeds of 4 Chinese cabbage lines were produced using bud pollination which is a conventional technique for inbred lines. Results showed that line 40-9 gave the highest seed weight of 0.165 g/plant. Using seed set analysis technique to check self-incompatibility, lines 23-3-4, 27, 27-3-7, and 40-9 were found to be self-incompatible among the 9 Chinese cabbage lines evaluated. However, when fluorescent microscope technique was used, the self-incompatible lines were 23-3-4, 27, 27-3-7, 40-9, and 142. Four inbred lines with self-incompatibility were selected to produce seeds. When line 40-9 was used as female parent in reciprocal crosses by bee pollination, the progenies gave the highest seed yield, an indication of maternal effect. Crosses 40-9 x 142-5, 40-9 x 27-3-7 and 40-9 x 23-3-4 gave high seed weight of 4.8, 3.9 and 2.7 kg/rai, respectively. Comparison of 11 Chinese cabbage hybrids with 3 commercial varieties showed that hybrid 142-5 x 40-9 gave the highest head yield with 6,170 kg/rai, 36.3% higher than commercial varieties. Other crosses such as hybrids 23 x 27, 23 x 142, 27-3-7 x 23-”.-4, 27-3-7 x 142-5 and 40-9 x 23-3-4 had good horticultural characteristics. These results indicate that improvement of parental lines is necessary to enhance good F1 hybrid.

Abstract

Planning materials, using coconut dust: coarse sand: clayey soil (Rangsit soil series) at the ratio of 3:1:2 , 3:1:1 and 3:1:0:5 by volume, and combinations of chemical fertilizer (15-15-15) at the rate of 0, 10 and 20 g/pot and castor meal 0, 25 and 50 g/pot were tested for the optimum growth of Chinese cabbage and balsam grown in 12 litre pot (or so-called in the market as 12-inch in diameter pot size). The experimental results showed that the 3:1:1 and 3:1:0:5 planting materials were suitable for the growth of Chinese cabbage and balsam. In Chinese cabbage, 3:1:1 planting material applied with 50 g or 25 g of castor meal/pot combined with 20 g chemical fertilizer/pot were shown to be among the best mixture. The alternative of the above combination could be 3:1:0:5 planting material applied with castor meal and chemical fertilizer at the rate of 50 g and 20 g/pot respectively. In balsam, 3:1:1 planting materials applied with 50 g of castor meal/pot and 10 g of chemical fertilizer/pot gave the highest growth. Second to this combination was 3:1:0.5 planting materials applied with 50 g of castor meal/pot together with 10 or 20 g of chemical fertilizer/pot.

Abstract

The effect of SADH was studied in relation to head formation of off-season growing ‘Thianchin # 23’ (Brassica compestris L. ssp pekinensis) (Lour) Olsson) Chinese Cabbage. Plants were treated with 1,000 2,000 and 4,000 ppm SADH four times at every 4 – day period after they were transplanted for 30 days. It was found that SADH treatment largely increased total fresh weight, head weight and heading percentage as compared to the control. Plants treated with 2,000 and 4,000 ppm, SADH at 2,000 and 4,000 ppm increased 3-fold in head weight higher than the control. The heading efficiency (head weight : outer leaves weight ratio) of the SADH treated plants was about 3-fold higher than the control.

Abstract

The effectiveness of three bio-extracts: Chinese kale, Chinese cabbage and soybean on Chinese kale growth was compared. The nutrient composition and chemical properties of the three bio-extracts were investigated. The various concentrations of each bio-extract were applied daily to the supporting media, to enhance Chinese kale growth. The height, fresh weight and dry weight of the Chinese kale were measured for both stems and leaves. The results showed that the acidic condition of all bio-extracts had a high electrical conductivity (EC). However, the nutrient concentration in each bio-extract was noted to be less than that of the complete nutrient solution. Furthermore, soybean bio-extract performed the best in the most acidic conditions, had the highest EC values, and the greatest amount of total nutrients. Chinese kale and Chinese cabbage bio-extracts performed similarly in terms of chemical characteristics. With regard to growth enhancement using these bio-extracts with determined concentrations, a complete nutrient solution gave the best height and both fresh and dry weights, and showed a significant statistical difference from the other two bio-extracts. Soybean bio-extract was the most effective bio-extract to enhance growth.

Abstract

The effect of SADH on Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis cv. Tienjin # 23) grew during summer was studied in relation to head formation.SADH at 2,000 ppm was applied by foliar appli?cation to Chinese cabbage after transplanting 20, 25, 30 and 35 days for 1, 2, 3 and 4 times at 5 day? interval. It was found that head weight of Chinese cabbage was maximally increased up to 41.67 % over the control, when one SADH application was given to Chinese cabbage after they had been transplanted for 30 days. The effect of SADH on the number of inner leaves, outer leaves, lateral shoots, length of core and chlorophyll content was discussed in relation to mechanism of SADH on heading of Chinese cabbage.
